Deep Dry Needling (DDN) is a popular and extremely effective treatment we offer at South Tipperary Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic to alleviate muscular pain and tension. Our Chartered Physiotherapists have undergone extensive training in this area and uses it in conjunction with other treatment techniques to alleviate pain.
Myofascial trigger points are commonly the source of a lot of pain in patients that present to our clinic. They are tender points, palpable as taut bands of muscle and occur in overworked or traumatised muscles. They refer pain along recognised pathways. Dry needling is a technique used to release the tension in these points and therefore alleviate pain.
Dry needling involves the insertion of fine needles into a palpable trigger point causing a twitch response. The needles used are sterile and single use needles. It is not unlike acupuncture but works on a different principal.
Dry needling is very effective in rapidly reducing pain and muscle spasm and improving normal function. It is effective in treating deep muscles of the body that are difficult to access manually. At our clinic, it is generally used in conjunction with hands on treatment and a stretching/ rehabilitation program.
